This is one of my Rahman favourites. I like the way Rahman has combined Sivamani's drums and the mrdangam, and that the song is composed in Natabhairavi (with one anyaswara in places in the charanam/antaraal) like Vaseegara makes it a likeable tune.
Ah philramble, I do not know much about the Ragas and all, so I have to own up to my ignorance...
