Ninnukori Varnam

Agni Nakshatram (1988)

This was a cult song in the Maniratnam-induced era of "different" film-making; Amala dancing in PC Sriram's psychedelic lighting to Ilayaraaja's fulsome beats and Prabhu looking on - Somewhere Chitra's wonderful singing gets pushed to the background. Another very difficult song to sing, and I know I haven't done justice to it, a big ask, anyway, right?

One of the beautiful aspects of the original Ninnukori (Varnam) was the variations in the elaborate "i" in Ninnukori. I think Chitra is the playback singer in the Ilayaraja song and of course she sings it in a similar way. Try that out, it's quite difficult to sing with the variations and gamakas all in one place. But it might be worth a try! :)

I set up a little blog with my own experiments in music (only guitar at present, but I hope for more):

Do pay a visit when possible, you're welcome.
